Ideal Wear


Both carbide and diamond wear uniformly.


Premature Exposure of Diamond


The matrix wears earlier than the diamond. The diamond is exposed too early, reducing the life of the bit.


Causes


Excessive drilling pressure relative to rotation speed;


Insufficient water flow;


Matrix too soft.


Countermeasures


Increase rotation speed, reduce drilling pressure;


Increase water flow;


Replace the bit (with a harder matrix).


Bit Burning


The matrix completely melts, blocking the waterway.


Causes


Water leakage;


Poor water circulation.


Countermeasures


Increase water flow;


Check if the mud pump is working properly;


Check drill rod joints for leaks;


Confirm if the inner tube is too long and adjust if necessary.


Bit Polishing


The bit does not progress, diamond particles appear polished.


Causes


Insufficient drilling pressure relative to rotation speed;


Excessive water flow;


Matrix too hard.


Countermeasures


Sharpen the bit;


Reduce rotation speed, increase drilling pressure;


Reduce water flow;


Replace the bit (with a softer matrix).


Inner Diameter Wear


Wear on the inner diameter or internal ring.


Causes


Excessive drilling pressure;


Extremely broken formation;


Core remains in the hole;


Matrix too soft.


Countermeasures


Increase rotation speed;


Reduce drilling pressure;


Replace the bit (with a harder matrix);


Increase water flow;


Check and adjust inner tube length.


Outer Diameter Wear


Wear on the outer diameter or external ring.


Causes


Vibration;


Excessive rotation speed;


Insufficient water flow;


Hole collapse, hole expansion.


Countermeasures


Increase water flow;


Reduce rotation speed;


Check the outer diameter of the reamer;


Add drilling fluid treatment agent to reduce vibration;


Try a new bit structure (deeper side water grooves or deeper water ports).


Inner Side Wear


The inner side of the bit wears faster than the outer side.


Causes


Excessive drilling pressure relative to rotation speed;


Core drilling the residue in the hole;


Extremely broken formation;


Core blocks inside the inner tube.


Countermeasures


Reduce drilling pressure;


Increase rotation speed;


Check and adjust inner tube length;


Add drilling fluid treatment agent for broken formations;


Do not try to apply pressure to clear a blocked core.


Outer Side Wear


The outer side of the bit wears faster than the inner side.


Causes


Insufficient water flow;


Drill rod leakage;


Hole expansion.


Countermeasures


Increase water flow;


Check for drill rod leaks;


Check the diameter of the reamer.
